Etymologically Yukalpetén means the region of the deer: Yukal, meaning in Mayan deer, and Petén, among other things, zone or region. Today the name Yucalpetén has been given to a harbor adjacent to the port of Progreso (Yucatán), located in the north of the peninsula, 37 km from the city of Mérida, which favors the local fishing industry and provides the resources for rational management of the Yucatán fishing fleet that is mostly concentrated in this port. Yucalpetén is connected by road to Chelém and Chuburná, to the west; Mérida to the south, and Progreso to the east.
